exploding head syndrome

a few days ago as i was falling asleep, i heard someone screaming in my head.
i thought it was some kind of dream, but i had barely fallen asleep, and there were no visuals, just sounds.
i just thought it was some kind of nightmare and tried to go back to sleep.
luckily, it didn't happen again and i was able to fall asleep after that.

last night, i had a similar experience.
i was dozing off while video chatting with my boyfriend, and i heard an explosion-type noise.
i woke up immediately, and tried to just shake it off.
i once again thought i was just having nightmares from stress/anxiety or something.
when i started dozing off again, i heard another loud horror-movie-ghost-entrance noise and woke right up.
i was scared it would happen again if i dozed off, so instead i said goodbye and purposely tried to put myself to sleep.
that worked.
however, at 6AM, i suddenly heard someone say, "IT'S TIME TO WAKE UP," in a very loud booming voice in my right ear.
you can imagine i woke the fuck up right then and there.
once again there were no visuals, just sounds, and no it was not a voice i recognized.

i decided to google it. "loud noises during sleep."
what came up was something called exploding head syndrome.
yes, you read that right.
my initial thought was panic - EXPLODING head syndrome?
but it's a totally benign sleep disorder, and although there are no confirmed causes, it's most likely due to stress, which would make a lot of sense.

at first i was flabbergasted and entertained at the name, but it quickly reminded me of one of my previous posts: why i wish depression had a different name.
exploding head syndrome sounds pretty serious, and although it itself is benign, its causes may be worthy of concern.
and the name kind of makes you feel concerned..!
so, kudos to whoever named this disorder exploding head syndrome.
